What instruments do you teach?
I teach acoustic guitar, electric guitar and bass guitar. Lessons are available for all ages and abilities, from complete beginners through to more advanced player
What experience do you have?
I have worked as a full time music educator for over 20 years, teaching around 40 hours a week across a wide range of settings. During this time I have taught thousands of students from primary school age through to university level, as well as private students of all ages and abilities.
My experience includes teaching in schools, Saturday Rock School programmes, week long residential music courses and county ensemble groups. I also have extensive experience supporting students with additional needs and adapting lessons to suit each individual.
Do you have insurance and a DBS certificate?
As I also teach in local schools, I hold an enhanced DBS certificate, which I'm happy to show you at your first lesson.
Teaching in educational settings has given me a thorough understanding of safeguarding procedures and the importance of creating a safe, supportive learning environment. I also complete safeguarding training every year to ensure my knowledge and practices remain up to date. I'm a member of the Musicians' Union, which includes public liability insurance for complete peace of mind.
What is the guitar teaching setup?
Lessons take place in my purpose built conservatory studio, which has a solid tiled roof, heating, air conditioning and plenty of space to learn comfortably all year round. An amplifier and lead are provided for electric guitar and bass students. You'll just need to bring your own instrument. The teaching studio has its own side gate entrance, providing direct access without needing to come through the house. There's also ample off road parking. Parents are welcome to wait during their child's lesson if they wish. The adjoining L shaped living room offers a comfortable waiting area with a degree of privacy from family life, which includes my wife, our child and our two friendly greyhounds.
Can I have a taster session?
Unfortunately, I don't offer taster sessions. My teaching diary is usually full, so I focus on regular lessons for committed students. If you're unsure whether lessons are right for you, feel free to get in touch and I'll be happy to answer any questions before you book.
Is there a guitar I can borrow during the lessons?
I have a small number of guitars available for use during lessons, so if you're just starting out you don't need to own an instrument straight away. However, I do recommend getting your own guitar as soon as possible so you can practise between lessons. I'm also happy to advise you on choosing the right instrument to suit your budget and musical interests.
Can I book fortnightly lessons?
Generally, I don't offer fortnightly lessons during the busy after school and early evening periods, as these slots are in high demand. The exception is if you can share a regular time with another student on alternate weeks. Daytime fortnightly lessons may be available, so please get in touch to discuss the options.
